Kiteboarding in May in Sicily
Many of you might be wondering where to go for a kitesurfing trip this May. Is Italian Sicily the right place? How’s the weather, the wind conditions and what are the prices locally during this period?
Wind conditions
As we already wrote in the post When is it windy in Sicily?, May in Lo Stagnone is one of the windiest months of the season. During May in the 2022 season we literally had only 4 windless days.
The wind however can be very strong and gusty and kiting often requires the use of 7 – 8m kites which isn’t suitable for less advanced riders. Keep in mind that conditions are changeable during the week and that strong winds in Lo Stagnone last for a maximum of 3 days in a row.
Daytime temperatures fluctuate between 20 – 25 ℃, nights can be chilly (a sweatshirt or perhaps a light jacket will do), the water is not yet warmed by the sun so most people will kite in a long 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit.
There may also be some night-time or morning rainfall. Generally the weather is somewhat similar to any Baltic southern seaside in the summer (like polish Hel Peninsula), except that it is windy and sunny during the day.
Prices
Accommodation prices remain the same, the biggest difference is in the price of flights, which around Labor Day are usually 2 – 3 times more expensive than regularly. Remember not to pospone booking them. The longer you wait, the more you’ll pay!
