What kitesurfing gear should you take?
Spots are different in many ways. There are different wave patterns, wind directions and above all wind speed in different locations. This determines what gear is most appropriate for a particular spot.
Board
If you’re going to Lo Stagnone you’ll be kiting on a completely flat lagoon with no ripples.
Between July and August wind speed oscillates between 15 and 18kt. If you are a rider weighing over 80kg take a 145cm+ board. Bigger size of the board won’t influence the comfort of kiting but it can help you squeeze the maximum out of the weaker conditions’ day.
For the more advanced riders this is a perfect spot to start your boot kitesurfing adventure. With water shallow to a maximum of mid-thigh across the entire lagoon this is the ideal place to start your wakestyle experience.
Most people weighing up to 75kg and kiting in straps use boards from 134 (rather girls) to 138 cm. A notable advantage is the low price of sports luggage on low-cost airlines flying to Sicily. Quiver with a board will cost you about 30 – 35 euros (prices checked for PL-IT flights).
Kites
If you want to come in April-May be prepared for smaller kites. 7 – 9m even for heavier riders, which doesn’t mean that the classic 12 – 14m won’t be occasionally useful. During this period days with strong winds are quite common, allowing loops at higher altitudes.
During the holiday season people under 75kg on 90% of days would kite at 12m right-left, light girls often at 10m. If you are more advanced and ride with greater power take something in the 13 – 14m range. For people 80kg+, something in size 14 – 15m and, as mentioned earlier, a larger board would definitely be useful.
