Kiedy wieje na Sycylii?

When is it windy in Sicily?

You often ask about wind conditions at particular seasons in Lo Stagnone. In this post we’ll try to explain what’s the best time to take your dream trip!

Let’s start with the wind statistics available online:

Statistically most wind will be experienced between January and May with the peak occurring in April. How does it look in reality?

April and May

We can confidently say that the most wind you’ll experience is indeed in April and May. April on the other hand is more unpredictable in terms of rain. Frequent, heavy rainstorms, thunderstorms or even hail regularly make it difficult for us to kitesurf. The wind can also be very strong and gusty, often above 30kt.

May on the other hand is a very good month for kiting and learning. This season (2022) we’ve only had 4 windless days in a whole month! Kiting in these months requires a long wetsuit, but it’s not too cold. A 3/2 wetsuit will be enough.

June

From June onwards the classic Sicilian season begins with around 75% windy days and even, warm winds around 12 – 18kt.

The last two weeks of June are an exception! A heatwave sweeps through the island during this time (as it does across the rest of Europe) making us much less likely to practice kitesurfing. Last season we’ve only had 2 / 7 windy days in that period. Kitesurfing without wetsuits!

July and August

Classic Sicily – kiting without wetsuits, 80% windy days, steady winds around 12 – 18kt starting mostly in the afternoon. These months are hot and that’s something to be reckoned with. Thanks to the high temperatures we have thermal winds that give us perfect conditions for kitesurfing. High temperatures are not very inconvenient thanks to the constant movement of air.

September October

September has similar wind conditions to July and August, some days can be cooler and sometimes you need to wear a short wetsuit. October on the other hand has a chance of around 60% windy days, already kiting in long wetsuits and more frequent rain.
