Temperatures on Sicily
Sicily is one of Europe’s warmest regions which doesn’t necessarily mean that summer heat is unbearable here! Which periods are the hottest and how to cope with the heat?
Weather forecasts in Sicily often show us very unfavourable or even alarming readings. In reality however these high temperatures are not so uncomfortable due to wind, constant air movements and low humidity.
In the cities there’s plenty of shade provided by narrow streets and trees and most of the flats are air-conditioned. We can buy a bottle of cold water at every corner which makes it much easier to hydrate.
The hottest periods
The hottest time in Sicily is the 2nd half of June. That’s when a heatwave sweeps through the whole Europe, which doesn’t spare our island either and temperatures in can reach over 45°C. Admittedly such heat plus the often windless days during this period can be a pain.
- wear loose clothing made of natural fabrics
- use sunscreen
- if you’re sun-sensitive wear long sleeves
July and August are still hot, but it’s bearable The real-feel temperature is around 30°C which combined with appropriate clothing and frequent hiding in the shade isn’t inconvenient for most people.
As for kitesurfing – these temperatures give us guaranteed warm water in the lagoon and kiting without wetsuits.
If you’re worried about being exposed to the sun during class, here are some tips from us:
- use long-sleeved lycra to avoid sunburn on your arms
- always wear sunglasses
- hydrate! drink some water before the session
- the helmet you will wear during the class effectively protects your head from the sun
All of the above combined with wind guarantees a comfortable learning environment without overheating the body!
Early September brings a slight cooldown with temperatures around 27°C but we’re still kiting without wetsuits. From the third week of September onwards the water in the lagoon gets cooler which makes some people start using short wetsuits. As we get closer to October it’s more likely to encounter heavy rain and thunderstorms that effectively bring the temperature down.
April, May and October are relatively cooler months here on Sicily. Temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 25°C. We wear sweatshirts and long pants more often and kite in long wetsuits. This doesn’t mean that you’ll freeze, 20°C is still a pleasant temperature!
